Why July 1?
On July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the Newfoundland Regiment suffered devastating losses at Beaumont-Hamel in France. Of roughly 800 men who went into action that morning, only a small number answered roll call the next day.
How the day is observed
Many people attend memorial services in the morning, including at the National War Memorial in St. John’s, before Canada Day celebrations later in the day.
